Glazed Baby - Squeeze The Tail, Suck The Head - Seven inch vinyl on Allied Recordings

Glazed Baby - Squeeze The Tail, Suck The Head - Seven inch vinyl on Allied Recordings

Boston, MA's disturbingly named Glazed Baby released two mid-'90s albums -- 1994's Karmic Debt and 1996's Atomic Communists -- containing Melvins-styled alternative sludge metal. By the time the latter disc hit the streets, guitarists Josh Newton and Joel Hamilton had reportedly already quit the group, and the remaining members, bassist Dale Cunningham and drummer Andy, didn't last very long without them.
GobbleHoof - Headbanger / Ridin Shotgun - Seven inch vinyl featuring J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr on SST Records

GobbleHoof - Headbanger / Ridin Shotgun - Seven inch vinyl featuring J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr on SST Records

The fact that J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr) was the drummer on GobbleHoof's six-song debut ensured a measure of fanzine-level interest for the Amherst, Massachusetts, group. However, the person who really makes GobbleHoof worth hearing is Charlie Nakajima (who was in the pre-Dinosaur Deep Wound with Mascis and Lou Barlow), less a singer than a dramatic speaker with a commanding presence. His credit for "narration" rather than vocals is apt. As guitarist Tim Aaron reels off competent grunge noise (complete with wah-wah and all the trimmings), Nakajima recounts his lyrics in a weary, resonant deep voice, only occasionally reaching out to catch passing melody notes.
Gone - All The Dirt That's Fit To Print - Vinyl album by Greg Ginn on SST Records 1994

Gone - All The Dirt That's Fit To Print - Vinyl album by Greg Ginn on SST Records 1994

Greg Ginn's productivity verged on the breakneck side when he returned in 1993 as a solo artist. He quickly issued three albums under his name, and even time for two more albums with Gone, the instrumental trio that he'd jump-started during the twilight of his former band, Black Flag. Sitting still clearly isn't in his nature, but Ginn diehards won't mind: nor should they. This version of Gone benefits from the infusion of drummer Gregory Moore and bassist Steve Sharp; they thunder every bit as hard as their predecessors Sim Cain and Andrew Weiss, but with greater tightness and precision. Ginn's freeform punk jazz fusion approach remains intact, only with less emphasis on jamming for its own sake.
Penny Dreadfuls - Fodder - All Female Punk Rock 7 Inch Record

Penny Dreadfuls - Fodder - All Female Punk Rock 7 Inch Record

The seeds of the all-female Los Angeles alt-rock quartet the Penny Dreadfuls were originally planted in a Californian high school, where two friends (drummer Andrea Sanchez and guitarist Melanie Makaiwi) often discussed one day starting a band. It wasnt long before the duo placed an ad in an L.A. music paper and found singer Anna Chaffee and bassist Chimene Gonzalez. The new group realized that they shared the same goal - to form a compelling rock band that would be appreciated on its musical merits, not for being all female. They began gigging on the West Coast, opening for such acts as the Afghan Whigs, Morphine, and Redd Kross, and began gaining the interest of record companies. Their first release was a seven inch (Sooner or Later) which also appeared on the Triple X Records compilation It Came From Beneath L.A. The group eventually signed with Restless and began work on their debut album with producer D.C. Herring (Satchel, Throwing Muses, etc.). Before the albums release, another single came out, the intense rocker Fodder. Eventually their self-titled debut was released, which earned unfair press comparisons to such past female groups as the Go-Go's and Hole.

Dancing French Liberals Of 48 - Spags - 7 inch featuring members of the punk band The Gits on Broken Rekids

The band formed by the members of The Gits after Zapata was killed in 1993. It was a band formed and performed in her honor and raised money for the private investigation into her murder. The tone is angry and Joe Spleen takes over on lead vocals
Big Dipper - All Going Out Together - Vinyl album with members of Volcano Suns on Homestead Records

Big Dipper - All Going Out Together - Vinyl album with members of Volcano Suns on Homestead Records

In 1986, former members of Volcano Suns, Gary Waleik and Steve Michener (the latter was also in Dumptruck), recruited guitarist/vocalist Bill Goffrier (formerly of The Embarrassment), and drummer Jeff Oliphant (formerly of XS and the Iron Gerbils), who was Gary's cousin. Goffrier struck up a friendship with Waleik when he attended a Volcano Suns gig in mid-1985, and the next year the band was formed.Their first release was the 1987 mini-album Boo-Boo on Homestead Records (released on Demon Records in the UK). The full-length album Heavens, which was released later in 1987, has been described as "one of the finest American indie albums of its era". Their second full-length album, Craps, followed in 1988. Three of the band contributed with songwriting. One of the tracks on the album reflected Goffrier's interest in extra-terrestrial phenomena, with the song "Semjase" about a Swiss farmer who in the 1970s claimed to have been regularly visited by Semjase, a woman from the constellation Pleides. They signed to Epic Records for 1990's Slam. This would prove to be their final album. Michener left the band and they continued with various players for two years, splitting up in 1992 after releasing a 45 and recording more than an albums worth of material. In 2008, Merge Records released a 3-CD anthology of Big Dipper's Homestead recordings, with additional material, including the unreleased tracks recorded after Michener left, titled Supercluster: The Big Dipper Anthology. This renewed interest has prompted the band to reform for some live shows in April 2008
Big Drill Car - Small Block - Vinyl album with members of Doughboys and All Systems Go! on Cruz Records 1988

The Roches - Speak - Cassette tape on MCA Records

After Big Drill Car disbanded, Daly and Arnold joined former Doughboys singer John Kastner and drummer Matt Taylor in All Systems Go! in 1998, recording a self-titled full-length that appeared a year later. All Systems Go! then opened for high-profile acts such as Pearl Jam, Cheap Trick, and Cracker, giving the group the mainstream recognition Big Drill Car never tasted.
Junk Monkeys - Soul Cakes - Vinyl album on Restless Records

Junk Monkeys - Soul Cakes - Vinyl album on Restless Records

Formed in the mid-'80s by singer/guitarist David Bierman, guitarist Dave Boutette, bassist Kevin Perri, and drummer Dan Allen, Dearborn, MI's Junk Monkeys evolved from a previous band named Mystery Girls (no, not those Mystery Girls), and cut their teeth in Detroit clubs before finding an unlikely home with L.A.-based Metal Blade Records. Unlikely because Junk Monkey albums like 1989's Soul Cakes, 1990s Five Star Fling, and 1992's Bliss featured hook-laden power pop/punk inspired by '70s legends like Cheap Trick, Big Star, and the Flamin' Groovies; but not so far-fetched when one remembers Metal Blade had also signed the Goo Goo Dolls around the same time. In any case, just as the latter only managed to score mainstream success towards the end of their relationship with the label, the Junk Monkeys too failed to find an audience beyond Michigan and Midwestern borders during their tenure at Metal Blade, eventually departing to record a final live album in 1995's Follies Review before going their separate ways.
Lawndale - Beyond Barbecue - Vinyl album on SST Records

Lawndale - Beyond Barbecue - Vinyl album on SST Records

The second and final album by Lawndale doesn't make any astonishing advances from their first -- but how could you improve on one of the best surf-fusion albums ever made? The band's trademark interlocking guitar melodies are as energetic and precise as ever, and the compositions are as brilliant and quirky as ever. Once again, there is one highly unlikely fusion of two artists' work -- the version of Duke Ellington's "Caravan" with Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" -- and once again it works like a charm. Lawndale sounds perfect here, and there is no clue that this would be their swan song. After the recording of "Beyond Barbecue," the band drifted apart, and though they sporadically reunited for concerts and even wrote some new material, none of it was ever released.
SWA - Sex Doctor - Vinyl album featuring guitarist Sylvia Juncosa on SST Records

SWA - Sex Doctor - Vinyl album featuring guitarist Sylvia Juncosa on SST Records

Blending the punk sounds of the SST label (Black Flag, Minutemen) with those of '70s hard rock sludgemeisters, SWA debuted in 1985 with Your Future (If You Have One). Led by former Black Flag bassist Chuck Dukowski and vocalist Merrill Ward, the group released Sex Dr. the following year and then added guitarist Sylvia Juncosa (also with To Damascus). XCIII followed in 1987, after which Evolution 85-87 summed up the first three albums. Juncosa left soon after to begin a solo career, with Phil Van Duyne replacing her on 1989's Winter. It was SWA's last album, though Juncosa released solo albums in 1988 and 1989.
Trumans Water - Godspeed The Punchline - Vinyl album on Homestead Records 1993

Trumans Water - Godspeed The Punchline - Vinyl album on Homestead Records 1993

On Godspeed the Punchline, San Diego's Trumans Water added to their already incessant indie punk fan base. The hodgepodge of sounds at the beginning of the first track, "Destroy 1998," suggest a manic flurry of music to follow, and it's true. Many of the tracks begin with silly, innovative audio experiments. The band's confident and brash style of noisy indie rock was certainly catching on by this point. From the hypnotic howling at the beginning of "Long End of a Firearm" to the wonderful cut-and-paste avant noise on "Ungalactic," the band began to experiment with more than straightforward angular guitar noise. "Outpatient Lightspeed" and "Playboy Stabtone Bloodbath" manage to pack an album's worth of punkish energy into a few minutes. The quietly distant instrumentation of "Spaceship Next Door" dances behind Glen Galloway's spoken vocals on the disc's final track. While some of the band's charming sloppiness had faded, Galloway's unyielding vocals hadn't wavered. Homestead and LSR Records released the LP in 1993.
