7 Seconds - Live One Plus One - Cassette tape on Giant Records

7 Seconds - Live One Plus One - Cassette tape on Giant Records

Formed in the early '80s, the hardcore punk band 7 Seconds has been among the longest lived of any group from the first wave of Cali punk (forming in Reno, NV, and eventually relocating to Sacramento), though frontman Kevin Seconds has proved to be the only consistent member; changes during the mid-'80s moved guitarist Bobby Adams, drummer Troy Mowat, and bassist Steve Youth (Seconds' brother) into the lineup. The group released several 7" singles just after forming, and Seconds signed the band to the Better Youth Organization label by 1982. The three LPs released on BYO culminated in 7 Seconds' most authoritative album, Walk Together, Rock Together. Signed to Restless in the late '80s, 7 Seconds delivered Soulforce Revolution and Ourselves before moving again, to Headhunter. The band released three albums for Headhunter, but signed with their first major label, Epic, in 1995. The Music, the Message was 7 Seconds' first Epic LP, released in 1995. By 1999's Good to Go, however, the band was back on the indie front, now releasing material through the Side 1 label. In mid-2000, they released Scream Real Loud, followed five years later by their 13th LP, Take It Back, Take It On, Take It Over! Throughout the group's career, Seconds has maintained several side projects, including Drop Acid, Five Feet Ten Inches, and Mustard. He also released several solo efforts starting in the '90s, including a 2002 split acoustic album on Asian Man alongside Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba.

Angry Samoans - Live At Rhino Records - Cassette tape of LA punk on Triple XXX Records

Along with X, Black Flag, Fear and the Circle Jerks, the savagely satirical Angry Samoans rode the first wave of Los Angeles punk. Formed in Van Nuys, California in the summer of 1978, the band was founded by singers and guitarists "Metal" Mike Saunders and Gregg Turner, a pair of erstwhile rock critics who previously teamed with fellow writer Richard Meltzer in the group Vom. After considering names like the Egyptians and the Eigen Vectors (a mathematical term -- Turner later became a math professor), they settled on the Angry Samoans, enlisted Saunders' brother Kevin on guitar, bassist Todd Homer and drummer Bill Vockeroth, and initially set out as a Dictators cover band.
D.O.A. - Talk Minus Action Equals Zero - Cassette tape on Restless Records

D.O.A. - Talk Minus Action Equals Zero - Cassette tape on Restless Records

D.O.A. is not only Canada's most important punk band; they're also one of punk's most enduring bands, period. While many of the punk acts that emerged in the late '70s broke up in the '80s -- that is, if they even stayed together until then -- D.O.A. was still going strong well into the '90s. Recorded at Club Soda in D.O.A.'s native Vancouver in 1989, Talk Minus Action Equals Zero is among the albums that demonstrate how exciting and vital the Canadians can be on-stage. The lineup on this CD consists of singer Joey "Shithead" Keithley, guitarist Chris "Humper" Prohom, bassist Brian Roy Goble, and drummer Jon Card. Together they prove quite riveting on such left-leaning, angrily socio-political rants as "Fuck You," "General Strike," "Liar for Hire," and "Race Riot." This performance was recorded 11 years after D.O.A.'s formation, and it's clear that the band softened their blow very little during those years.
Dag Nasty - 1985-86 - Cassette tape on Selfless Records

Dag Nasty - 1985-86 - Cassette tape on Selfless Records

Dag Nasty kept roaring D.C.-styled hardcore alive during the mid-'80s. Although the group was more accessible and melodic than Minor Threat, they never lost their bracing, blistering edge. Formed by former-Minor Threat and Meatmen guitarist Brian Baker and ex-DYS vocalist Dave Smalley, Dag Nasty recorded their first album, Can I Say (1986), with D.C.-punk guru Ian MacKaye assisting on the production. The following year, Smalley left the group; he was replaced by Peter Cortner, who added more pop elements to the band's sound. Dag Nasty moved from MacKaye's Dischord label to Giant in 1988, releasing their last album, Field Day. Along with former-Big Boy Chris Gates, Baker formed the metal band Junkyard in 1989, which released two records on Geffen before fading away. Dag Nasty came back together in 1992, releasing Four on the Floor for the growing underground punk scene that was only a few short years from breaking into the mainstream. The response was enthusiastic, but the band stepped away from the business again. Ten years later, they reunited with the emo rock call-to-arms Minority of One and released it on Revelation Records.
GBH - From Here To Reality - Cassette tape on Restless Records

GBH - From Here To Reality - Cassette tape on Restless Records

On Godspeed the Punchline, San Diego's Trumans Water added to their already incessant indie punk fan base. The hodgepodge of sounds at the beginning of the first track, "Destroy 1998," suggest a manic flurry of music to follow, and it's true. Many of the tracks begin with silly, innovative audio experiments. The band's confident and brash style of noisy indie rock was certainly catching on by this point. From the hypnotic howling at the beginning of "Long End of a Firearm" to the wonderful cut-and-paste avant noise on "Ungalactic," the band began to experiment with more than straightforward angular guitar noise. "Outpatient Lightspeed" and "Playboy Stabtone Bloodbath" manage to pack an album's worth of punkish energy into a few minutes. The quietly distant instrumentation of "Spaceship Next Door" dances behind Glen Galloway's spoken vocals on the disc's final track. While some of the band's charming sloppiness had faded, Galloway's unyielding vocals hadn't wavered. Homestead and LSR Records released the LP in 1993.
Hammerhead - Evil Twin - Cassette tape on Amphetamine Reptile Records

Hammerhead - Evil Twin - Cassette tape on Amphetamine Reptile Records

With power and intensity to spare, post-punk hard rock trio Hammerhead could as easily have been called "Sledgehammer" (even if a heavy metal outfit from England hadn't beat them to it). Paul Sanders (vocals, guitar), Paul Erickson (vocals, bass), and Jeff Mooridian Jr. (drums) formed the group in Fargo, ND, around 1990, and moved to Minneapolis, MN, just a few years later. Amphetamine Reptile, which is also located in Minneapolis, released all of their recordings. The band has cited Taxi Driver's Travis Bickle as a guiding influence on their loud, dark, rhythmic approach. Others have compared them to everything from hardboiled pulp fiction authors Jim Thompson and James M. Cain, to brain-pounding noise rock units Unsane, Surgery, and Bastro.
Naked Raygun - All Rise - Cassette tape on Homestead Records

Naked Raygun - All Rise - Cassette tape on Homestead Records

Something happened during the two-year time span between Naked Raygun's first album and the follow-up All Rise. Rather than having more of the offbeat, absurd song formality that gave their debut Throb Throb its edge, this album has more of a structured quality. Not to say that Naked Raygun have lost their touch; by progressing into a more (dare it be said) mature sound, they have remained one step ahead of all the Raygun clones emerging from their hometown Chicago. The results are pretty decent; with songs like "Home of the Brave," "Knock Me Down" and "I Remember," their Buzzcocks roots are more apparent, while "New Dreams" kicks it into overdrive with a more positive aspect, and "I Got New Dreams and I'm Going to Make Them Real" displays vocalist Jeff Pezzati. Sometimes change can be for the better.
No Use For A Name - Incognito - Cassette tape on New Red Archives Records

No Use For A Name - Incognito - Cassette tape on New Red Archives Records

Incognito was No Use for a Name's debut full-length, a solid slab of hulking hardcore with mighty fists full of metal. At this point, the group was a trio comprised of Tony Sly, Rory Koff, and bassist Steve Papoutsis. Melodies were at a premium, the rhythms were pusillanimous, the attitude angry, and the atmosphere threatening. On the almost Neurosis-like "It Won't Happen Again," they're absolutely menacing, a far cry from their more contemporary sound. However, there are hints of their future direction. "Truth Hits Everybody," for example, is fast and furious, with a contagious melody and an anthemic, harmony-rinsed chorus. Producers Brett Gurewitz and Donnell Cameron give the whole album a shine, smoothing down the more jagged edges and gracing the album with a more coherent feel than the group really had in those early days. No Use for a Name had a way to go, and at this point they were more in the thrall of metal than punk. That would change.
Reagan Youth - Volume 2 - Cassette tape on New Red Archives Records

Reagan Youth - Volume 2 - Cassette tape on New Red Archives Records

Reagan Youth was an American hardcore punk band started by singer Dave Rubinstein (Dave Insurgent) and his friend and guitarist Paul Bakija in Queens in early 1980. They have been labeled peace punk as well as hardcore. Their name is a word play on Hitler Youth. An important group in the New York/New Jersey hardcore scene, they performed very regularly at CBGB and toured the U.S. extensively, often with other early punk bands such as the Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains and The Misfits. The Beastie Boys and Rancid, among other significant successful punk rock and alternative rock groups, have cited Reagan Youth as an influence.
Redd Kross - Born Innocent - Cassette tape on Frontier Records

Redd Kross - Born Innocent - Cassette tape on Frontier Records

Originally issued in 1982, Born Innocent was the debut full-length release from Redd Kross, a band of suburban L.A. youth fronted by brothers Jeff (guitar, vocals) and Steve McDonald (bass). Aged 18 and 14, respectively, the aspiring punks are aided and abetted here by rhythm guitarist Tracy Lee and drummers Janet Housden and John Stielow as they attack these 16 songs with all the patience of over-stimulated teens and all the subtlety of a slasher flick. The average song length falls below the two-minute mark, during which time Jeff McDonald's whine is rarely coherent above the clamor of his band's brutal rock assault. The punk negation of titles like "Kill Someone You Hate," "Look up at the Bottom," and "Notes and Chords Mean Nothing to Me" couldn't be more appropriate descriptions for this music. "Solid Gold" is a slice of dislocated blues while "St. Lita Ford Blues" disintegrates from a stop-start punk party (complete with jubilant screams) to a raucous three-chord blur. Included for good measure are tributes to both actress Linda Blair ("Linda Blair") and serial killer Charles Manson ("Charlie" and a cover of Manson's own "Cease to Exist"). Though subsequent releases found Redd Kross cleaning up their act, this debut captures them in all their youthful glory; documenting the sound of the McDonalds and company unleashed on an unsuspecting set of guitars, bass, and drums.
