Trumans Water - Godspeed The Punchline - Vinyl album on Homestead Records 1993

Trumans Water - Godspeed The Punchline - Vinyl album on Homestead Records 1993

On Godspeed the Punchline, San Diego's Trumans Water added to their already incessant indie punk fan base. The hodgepodge of sounds at the beginning of the first track, "Destroy 1998," suggest a manic flurry of music to follow, and it's true. Many of the tracks begin with silly, innovative audio experiments. The band's confident and brash style of noisy indie rock was certainly catching on by this point. From the hypnotic howling at the beginning of "Long End of a Firearm" to the wonderful cut-and-paste avant noise on "Ungalactic," the band began to experiment with more than straightforward angular guitar noise. "Outpatient Lightspeed" and "Playboy Stabtone Bloodbath" manage to pack an album's worth of punkish energy into a few minutes. The quietly distant instrumentation of "Spaceship Next Door" dances behind Glen Galloway's spoken vocals on the disc's final track. While some of the band's charming sloppiness had faded, Galloway's unyielding vocals hadn't wavered. Homestead and LSR Records released the LP in 1993.
SWA - Sex Doctor - Vinyl album featuring guitarist Sylvia Juncosa on SST Records

SWA - Sex Doctor - Vinyl album featuring guitarist Sylvia Juncosa on SST Records

Blending the punk sounds of the SST label (Black Flag, Minutemen) with those of '70s hard rock sludgemeisters, SWA debuted in 1985 with Your Future (If You Have One). Led by former Black Flag bassist Chuck Dukowski and vocalist Merrill Ward, the group released Sex Dr. the following year and then added guitarist Sylvia Juncosa (also with To Damascus). XCIII followed in 1987, after which Evolution 85-87 summed up the first three albums. Juncosa left soon after to begin a solo career, with Phil Van Duyne replacing her on 1989's Winter. It was SWA's last album, though Juncosa released solo albums in 1988 and 1989.
Sad Lovers And Giants - Treehouse Poetry - UK import vinyl album on Midnight Records 1991

Sad Lovers And Giants - Treehouse Poetry - UK import vinyl album on Midnight Records 1991

The original line up produced two albums, Epic Garden Music and Feeding the Flame, but split up in 1984 on the verge of commercial success. They returned in 1987 after a personnel change and released The Mirror Test, Headland and Treehouse Poetry before their label, Midnight Music, went bust in and the band split once again. E-mail From Eternity, a 'best of' compilation was released by Cherry Red in 1996 after picking up the Midnight catalogue from the receivers. The band rose from their frequently raked ashes to release a brand new album called Melting in the Fullness of Time in 2002 and played in Italy for the first time a year later.
Salem 66 - Frequency And Urgency - Vinyl album on Homestead Records 1987

Salem 66 - Frequency And Urgency - Vinyl album on Homestead Records 1987

Salem 66 was an indie group formed in 1982 by Judy Grunwald, Elisabeth Kaplan and Susan Merriam. At the time a serious all female rock band was somewhat unusual. Through the eighties, the band added and subtracted members, including Robert Wilson, Stephen Smith, Tim Condon, and Jim Vincent. The band lasted until 1989 and was an important part of the Boston alternative indie music scene during the 1980s. They recorded and released records on Homestead Records, a label founded by Gerard Cosloy. Their music was described as folk punk, but they could be called jangle pop and a loose association can be made with the Paisley Underground and groups such as R.E.M..
Run Westy Run - Hardly Not Even - Vinyl album produced by Grant Hart of Husker Du on SST Records 1988

Run Westy Run - Hardly Not Even - Vinyl album produced by Grant Hart of Husker Du on SST Records 1988

Run Westy Run was one of the later groups on the thriving Minneapolis post-punk scene. They were never quite as popular or influential as cohorts like Hüsker Dü, the Replacements, and Soul Asylum, partly because it took them a longer time to develop a distinctive style of their own. They experimented with blues, rock, country, folk, and punk, but not until later did their sound coalesce into something definably theirs, in spite of its frequent creativity

October Faction - S/T - Vinyl album members of Black Flag SWA Wurm Descendents on SST Records

October Faction was one of the many off-shoots of seminal punk band Black Flag, led by guitarist Greg Ginn. A supergroup of SST alumni that mixed jazz and hard rock mainly as an instrumental vehicle. Never an actual working band as much as an occasional jam band, they made two albums both released on the SST label in 1985 and 1986. The unofficial lineup included contributions from Bill Stevenson, Henry Rollins, Joe Baiza, Chuck Dukowski, Tom Trocolli, Greg Cameron, and the ever-present ringleader, Greg Ginn.
Meat Puppets - No Strings Attached - Double LPs

Meat Puppets - No Strings Attached - Double LPs

No Strings Attached is a 1990 compilation album of Meat Puppets songs released by their ex-record label SST Records. The compilation was released after the Meat Puppets left SST Records to join London Records. The compilation includes songs from their first album Meat Puppets (1982) through to their 1989 album Monsters.
Live Skull - Swingtime - Vinyl album on Homestead Records

Live Skull - Swingtime - Vinyl album on Homestead Records

Live Skull created abrasive no wave music not unlike their 1980s contemporaries Sonic Youth, Swans, Rat at Rat R, The Chameleons, Mars, Teenage Jesus & the Jerks and Band Of Susans. Their music featured angular guitar parts interspersed with bleak, quieter passages, for a haunting overall effect. The lyrical subject matter was usually as pessimistic and harsh as the noise rock itself. Live Skull never achieved mainstream recognition, but retain underground notoriety and share a family tree with other relatively noteworthy groups.
Lawndale - Beyond Barbecue - Vinyl album on SST Records

Lawndale - Beyond Barbecue - Vinyl album on SST Records

The second and final album by Lawndale doesn't make any astonishing advances from their first -- but how could you improve on one of the best surf-fusion albums ever made? The band's trademark interlocking guitar melodies are as energetic and precise as ever, and the compositions are as brilliant and quirky as ever. Once again, there is one highly unlikely fusion of two artists' work -- the version of Duke Ellington's "Caravan" with Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" -- and once again it works like a charm. Lawndale sounds perfect here, and there is no clue that this would be their swan song. After the recording of "Beyond Barbecue," the band drifted apart, and though they sporadically reunited for concerts and even wrote some new material, none of it was ever released.
Junk Monkeys - Soul Cakes - Vinyl album on Restless Records

Junk Monkeys - Soul Cakes - Vinyl album on Restless Records

Formed in the mid-'80s by singer/guitarist David Bierman, guitarist Dave Boutette, bassist Kevin Perri, and drummer Dan Allen, Dearborn, MI's Junk Monkeys evolved from a previous band named Mystery Girls (no, not those Mystery Girls), and cut their teeth in Detroit clubs before finding an unlikely home with L.A.-based Metal Blade Records. Unlikely because Junk Monkey albums like 1989's Soul Cakes, 1990s Five Star Fling, and 1992's Bliss featured hook-laden power pop/punk inspired by '70s legends like Cheap Trick, Big Star, and the Flamin' Groovies; but not so far-fetched when one remembers Metal Blade had also signed the Goo Goo Dolls around the same time. In any case, just as the latter only managed to score mainstream success towards the end of their relationship with the label, the Junk Monkeys too failed to find an audience beyond Michigan and Midwestern borders during their tenure at Metal Blade, eventually departing to record a final live album in 1995's Follies Review before going their separate ways.
Saint James Infirmary - S/T - Vinyl album

Saint James Infirmary - S/T - Vinyl album

The Oakland-based emo-core unit Saint James Infirmary comprised former members of East Bay area bands including Engage, Dempsey and Accustomed to Nothing; after debuting with a seven-inch single they recruited vocalist Scott Carter in time for their 1997 self-titled debut LP.
