The singles Mambo Witch and Colosseum Crash (featuring guest vocals by Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra) were also chart-topping hits. New members Fedjean Venvelt (guitars) and Peter Boone (keyboards) joined the band for their first US tour.

Evil Mothers - Crossdresser - Vinyl LP on Invisible Records

The industrial noise band Evil Mothers formed in Texas in 1990; comprising frontman Curse Mackey, guitarist Jason Ucab, bassist Patrick Sane and drummers Roland Bobles and B.O.B., the group released its debut album Crossdresser on the Invisible label two years later. After returning in 1994 with Pitchforks and Perverts, the Evil Mothers headlined the Invisible Route 666 tour, which also featured labelmates Psychic TV; in 1995, Mackey also toured as a member of Pigface, returning to record the I Love Fur EP in 1996. The full-length Spider Sex and Car Wrecks followed a year later, and in 1999 the Evil Mothers resurfaced with Beatings--Incriminating Fruit.

Pankow - Freedom For The Slaves - Vinyl album on Wax Trax Records

Pankow - Freedom For The Slaves - Vinyl album on Wax Trax Records

Part of the Wax Trax! stable of industrial artists, Pankow is a European duo based in Florence, Italy whose core consists of multi-instrumentalist/sample manipulator Maurizio Fasolo and German vocalist Alex Spalck. Dark and nihilistic in the extreme, as well as intermittently scatological, Pankow saw their first domestic release in 1988 with an EP called Freedom for the Slaves. 1989's Gisela, the band's first full-length album, contained a cover of the Normal's "Warm Leatherette," as well as the notorious "Me and My Ding Dong," which musically updated the sensibility of Chuck Berry's "My Ding-a-Ling." "Me and My Ding Dong" was remixed and issued as the centerpiece of an EP entitled Pankow Show You Their Dongs, upon which point the band parted ways with Wax Trax! Pankow resurfaced in 1991 with a live compilation on ROIR, Omne Anima Triste Post Coitum (which translates as "All Animals Are Sad After Coitus").
Lead Into Gold - Age Of Reason - Vinyl album featuring Paul Barker of Ministry on Wax Trax Records

Lead Into Gold - Age Of Reason - Vinyl album featuring Paul Barker of Ministry on Wax Trax Records

Lead into Gold derives its name from the mystical practice of alchemy. The band is basically a solo project for Paul Barker, a talented and avant-garde bassist who joined forces with Alain Jourgensen in the late '80s to create several influential and powerful Ministry. Paul and Roland Barker, as well as frequent future collaborator Bill Rieflin, played in a Seattle-based band called the Blackouts. When the Blackouts inked with Wax Trax! Jourgensen (already operating under the Ministry moniker) immediately partnered with Barker and the pair unleashed a multitude of vehicles including RevCo, 1000 Homo DJs, and Lard. Jourgensen and Barker dubbed themselves Hypo Luxa and Hermes Pan (respectfully and respectively) after a pair of free-wheeling Greek prostitutes. In the midst of this plethora of pounding, Lead into Gold emerged as Barker's baby. He wrote and sang each cut on the sole full-length Age of Reason, as well as the extended singles, Faster Than Light, Idiot, and Chicks and Speed: Futurism
Greater Than One - London - Double vinyl LP on Wax Trax Records

Greater Than One - London - Double vinyl LP on Wax Trax Records

A sprawling monster of an album upon its initial release, London became even more so in its Brainwashed reissue, a two-CD collection with the original album matched by a slew of bonus tracks, as well as a bonus DVD with the band's various videos and other visual projects. In whatever format, though, London is simultaneously a collection of stiff, steady industrial/funk beats just on the cusp of the flowing house/techno evolution that would fully upend expectations (and which Greater Than One soon came to grips with -- "Techno Golden Beat" here being a shuddering string-and-vocal loop moodout) -- and a moody, inventive album of sample based experimentation that took some of the shadowy experimenting of the post-punk years to their logical conclusion, as dramatic tracks like "The Rose, the Cross and the Flag" show. As with other London based experimenters such as Renegade Soundwave and Meat Beat Manifesto, arguably Greater Than One could only have come from the city that gave its name to the album -- song titles "Brick Lane" and "The Dark Streets of London" say it all (while the latter sounds like an amazing combination of This Mortal Coil and, two decades before its time, Burial) -- but similarly there's a sense of magpie appropriation from multiple sources. There's cut-and-paste experimentalism, the thick collages the Bomb Squad was creating for Public Enemy, the lingering impact of dub, any number of familiar and obscure samples, from Martin Luther King on the monumental "Now Is the Time" (included in the reissue in both its single and 12" mix) to random dialogue snippets throughout the album, which in combination with the sound effects almost make the album a Pink Floyd tribute from a much different angle. Meanwhile, the proto-dark ambient opening rumble of "Deep Shake," which almost predicts Main without even trying, and the concluding "Crisis" are just plain terrifying.

Missing Foundation - Assault On Your Life - Rare red vinyl seven inch on Lungcast records 1992

Missing Foundation - Assault On Your Life - Rare red vinyl seven inch on Lungcast records 1992

New York Citys Missing Foundation harked back to the sound and style of early industrial provocateurs like Throbbing Gristle and Einsturzende Neubauten, not just in their tribal percussion onslaught but also in their theatrical social-protest stunts. Led by Pete Missing, MF was a collective with several core members, several more auxiliary members, and a host of associates that swelled their ranks to as many as 20. Fueled by anarchist politics, the band favored agitprop slogans chanted over a cacophonous racket of metal, machinery, oil drums, garbage, and other found-object percussion, with guitar and other traditional instruments audible only occasionally. Their anti-establishment screeds took aim at a variety of targets, but what truly mattered were the groups incendiary live events - destructive spectacles that provoked civil disturbances, histrionic media outrage, and citywide bans by nervous club owners. Even the bands logo -- an upside-down martini glass in the cryptographic Neubauten style that came to signify The Partys Over - was the center of a widespread graffiti campaign on New Yorks Lower East Side, a discomforting weapon used to devalue properties and slow the area's gentrification (in keeping with the bands special concern for the poor and homeless).
