Gene Loves Jezebel - Discover - Vinyl LP on Beggars Banquet 1986

Gene Loves Jezebel - Discover - Vinyl LP on Beggars Banquet 1986

The album that launched Gene Loves Jezebel in America, Discover caught the British band perfectly poised between their post-punk gothy past and their arena future. The centerpiece was, of course, "Desire," the clarion cry of rock's late-'80s future, all yelps and pervasive riffs strafed by searing leads, and an insistent chorus that defied listeners not to shout along. Initial copies of the U.S. album featured the original single's mix with guitarist Ian Hudson, later ones were graced by an even more powerful version, turned into a sonic roar by producer Peter Walsh, and showcasing the group's new guitarist, James Stevenson. Stevenson's arrival helped set the stage for a serious shift in the band's musical direction, a reinvention of the Jezzie sound into a more rock-friendly, pop-esque style. The two versions of "Desire" illustrate that point to perfection. But at the time of recording, old and new styles, pop and goth, all filtered into the mix, and miraculously were held shimmeringly together. Miraculously, because during the recording, producer Gary Lyons suffered a heart attack, forcing the album to be completed by one of the engineers, Mike Dearnley. Regardless, Discover has a coherent feel, all awash in atmosphere, yet still giving Stevenson's sonic guitar plenty of room to maneuver. His bright riffs and Ronson-esque leads often take center stage, but he was equally willing to add the darker, brooding riffs that were the band's previous trademark, and on "A White Horse" he even pays tribute to the Banshee's signature drone. The highlight of these darkwave delights is "Beyond Doubt," which began life as an instrumental B-side. Stevenson's delicate guitar work imbues the haunting melody with ethereal lightness and paradoxically haunting depth. The yearning lead vocals add to the song's power, while the soaring falsetto backups send shivers down one's spine. In contrast were the brash pop/rock numbers like "Desire," "Heartache," and "Sweetest Thing." This was GLJ at it's best, as the band came together in a perfect wedding of all parties, sounds, and styles. Stadium guitar, Bauhausian experimentation, pop, and goth all combined to make a truly unforgettable album.
Shinobu Sato - Red Dragonfly - Vinyl Album

Shinobu Sato - Red Dragonfly - Vinyl Album

Shinobu Sato, born in Japan, toured and concertized extensively in that country before emigrating to the United States in 1979. Since then, he has performed at festivals, coffeehouses, colleges, radio and television throughout the United States and Japan. He has consistently earned a reputation as a master craftsman of both nylon and steel-string guitar with an unequaled skill and originality, grace and wit. He draws his material from a hitherto unheard of variety of sources. He is also known for his brilliant arrangements, drawing upon his vast knowledge of counterpoint and harmony. Red Dragonfly contains Sato's arrangements of J.S. Bach ("Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring'), Gershwin ("Prelude #2"), Scott Joplin ("Silver Swan") and Turlough O'Carolan ("Si Bheag, Si Mhor" and "Planxty Irwin"), as well as traditional compositions for shamisen, gospel songs, even "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."
Bryan Bowers - By Heart - Vinyl album on Flying Fish Records 1984

Bryan Bowers - By Heart - Vinyl album on Flying Fish Records 1984

In two consecutive years, 2006 and 2007, he released new recordings: Bristlecone Pine and September in Alaska. "Although such guests as Tim O'Brien, Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan, and Enright and O'Bryant play and sing on a number of cuts, this is a Bryan Bowers disc all the way, with his exquisite autoharp flavoring many of the tunes," wrote a November 2006 Bluegrass Unlimited reviewer of Bristlecone Pine. "Bowers selects thematically diverse and lyrically strong material. There are powerful love songs ("When You And I Were True" and "Magnolia") and non-cloying meditations on life and death ("Bristlecone Pine," "Friends For Life," and "When I Go"), as well as haunting instrumentals. He nicely avoids the hackneyed stuff of so many folk/bluegrass/country performers." He maintains an active performance and teaching schedule.
Clive Gregson - Strange Persuasions - Vinyl album on Demon Fiend Records 1985

Clive Gregson - Strange Persuasions - Vinyl album on Demon Fiend Records 1985

In 1984, Gregson discovered Collister singing in a folk club and, impressed by her talents, he offered to work with her on future projects. Gregson had already begun an association with Richard Thompson, initially singing backup on the classic Shoot Out the Lights album in 1982. While working on Thompson's Hand of Kindness, Gregson suggested using Collister for additional backup vocal duties. The formula worked and the two continued for years as integral parts of the Richard Thompson touring band -- arguably the finest live band he's assembled. In 1985, Gregson made a solo album, Strange Persuasions, with Collister singing backup on a few tracks. The two began performing as a duo on the folk club circuit shortly thereafter. The duo's first release was a homemade tape sold at gigs, later released as Home and Away. It was followed by their first formal album, Mischief, in 1987, and by a Change in the Weather in 1989. Love Is a Strange Hotel, released later the same year, was an album of cover versions of Gregson and Collister's favorite songs.
Trumans Water - Godspeed The Punchline - Vinyl album on Homestead Records 1993

Trumans Water - Godspeed The Punchline - Vinyl album on Homestead Records 1993

On Godspeed the Punchline, San Diego's Trumans Water added to their already incessant indie punk fan base. The hodgepodge of sounds at the beginning of the first track, "Destroy 1998," suggest a manic flurry of music to follow, and it's true. Many of the tracks begin with silly, innovative audio experiments. The band's confident and brash style of noisy indie rock was certainly catching on by this point. From the hypnotic howling at the beginning of "Long End of a Firearm" to the wonderful cut-and-paste avant noise on "Ungalactic," the band began to experiment with more than straightforward angular guitar noise. "Outpatient Lightspeed" and "Playboy Stabtone Bloodbath" manage to pack an album's worth of punkish energy into a few minutes. The quietly distant instrumentation of "Spaceship Next Door" dances behind Glen Galloway's spoken vocals on the disc's final track. While some of the band's charming sloppiness had faded, Galloway's unyielding vocals hadn't wavered. Homestead and LSR Records released the LP in 1993.
Tom Scott - Streamlines - Vinyl album on GRP Records 1987

Tom Scott - Streamlines - Vinyl album on GRP Records 1987

Since he was a teenager, Tom Scott has been consistent, a talented multi-reedist with little or no interest in playing creative jazz. His mother was a pianist and father a composer. Scott early on became a studio musician and arranger. Able to play most reeds with little difficulty, Scott performed with the Don Ellis and Oliver Nelson bands, and his L.A. Express became one of the most successful pop-jazz groups of the 1970s. Associations with Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and George Harrison were just a few of his successful assignments in the pop world and, although his 1992 GRP release Born Again was surprisingly inventive, it was a one-time departure from crossover.

Ace - Time For Another - Vinyl album UK pub rock on Anchor Records 1975

The members were assembled from various other professional bands, and were all competent musicians. Carrack and Comer had previously played with Warm Dust, and King with Mighty Baby, whose antecedents were the 1960s band The Action. Ace were popular on the pub rock circuit. Their music was pop with a funk influence.
Red Box - Chenko - 7 Inch UK Import On Cherry Red Records

Red Box - Chenko - 7 Inch UK Import On Cherry Red Records

Red Box was British pop group active in the 1980s. It was led by Simon Toulson-Clarke and Julian Close. The group was originally a five-piece band, and released its debut single Chenko on Cherry Red Records in 1983. Following this, the band slimmed down to a duo, and took on a more synthpop direction. Their second single Saskatchewan (a cover of the Buffy Sainte-Marie song) brought them to the attention of WEA, who signed the duo.
Oxymora - Thundering Silence - Vinyl LP on Fretless Philo Records

Oxymora - Thundering Silence - Vinyl LP on Fretless Philo Records

Comprised of Craig Matovich on oboe, Marcus Sims on mandolin, Jim Baird on bass and Michael DeLalla on guitar, Oxymora weaved their skills as classically trained performers and composers with their intricate take on improvisational interplay that bordered on intuitive. The group's critical acclaim echoed the sentiments; The Washington Post raved "...Groups of an experimental nature proliferated during the 1960's, but none was as eclectic as today's Oxymora...this is a group to watch...", while the prestigious jazz magazine Down Beat wrote "makes airy, honest music showcasing the players' classical music tidiness and their slightly unkempt enthusiasm for folk and jazz"
Edwyn Collins - Hellbent On Compromise - Vinyl Album

Edwyn Collins - Hellbent On Compromise - Vinyl Album

Best known for his tenure fronting the Scottish pop revivalists Orange Juice as well as his international solo hit "A Girl Like You," singer Edwyn Collins was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1959. In 1976, he formed the Nu-Sonics, which resurfaced three years later as Orange Juice; the leading proponent of the Glasgow neo-pop scene, the band earned a devoted cult following but little commercial success, and by the early 1980s Collins was the only remaining founding member. After a self-titled 1984 release failed to chart, Orange Juice disbanded, and Collins was freed from his contract with the group's label, Polydor.
